Packing tips: Look around for computer type cartons, these are usually double corrugated cardboard and very hefty. Chassis: Wrap the chassis in bubble pack. Use the smaller bubble, then the bigger as a second layer for best results. Box that in a suitable cardboard container. Now box it again in another cardboard container with a layer of bubble pack, or foam peanuts in between boxes. Tubes: If it is a chassis which you have pulled from a cabinet; remove all the tubes and wrap each one individually in small bubble pack. Pack all the tubes in a cardboard box with some more bubble wrap or foam peanuts. Now, put that box in another box with another layer of peanuts or bubble pack or newspaper in between. Ship this box separately from the chassis. Mark it "FRAGILE/GLASS" Combos: If the amp has tube covers and/or tube retaining clips: leave the tubes in their sockets. If not: pull and individually wrap each tube as described above. If space allows, place the individually wrapped tubes in a small box and then secure that box into the speaker cavity. If you can't fit the tubes in the back of the amp or if it seems that this may damage the speaker(s) somehow, then ship the tubes in a separate carton as described above. Wrap the entire amp with a layer of large bubble pack. Box it. Then box it again with another layer of bubble pack, foam or foam peanuts. Note: Do not use foam peanuts except as packing between the first and second box. They will shift around too much with odd shaped heavy electronic stuff. Most of them seem to end up in the back of your amp or inside your speakers. Also, mark the lightest side "this side up" so the package won't travel top heavy and topple during shipping. Speakers will travel best face down if possible. If your carton is the least bit flimsy, cover the speaker grill with an extra layer of cardboard or even masonite before you pack the amp.
Here's another idea: Finally, Our recommendations for shippers in order of preference: Fedex Express Saver - www.fedex.com - (3 day service) Always hand carried to our door. Always on time. Never broken torn or tattered. Fedex Ground - www.fedex.com/us/ground/ - excellent Fedex service & economical! UPS Ground - www.ups.com - Takes a week or sometimes less. (Pack the #*^@ out of it) Whichever carrier you use, buy adequate insurance. It's cheap and well worth it. |
